Most people either look forward to or quietly dread the Christmas and New Year season. If we let it, this time of year can be exhausting. Social gatherings multiply, shopping lists grow, cards and gifts pile up, parties fill the calendar, and our stress and anxiety rise right along with them.
What is interesting is that while the rest of nature slows down and rests for the winter, we have created the loudest, busiest, most stimulating weeks of the year. In all the noise of the holidays, we often forget the quiet celebration that winter already gives us: the winter solstice.
If there is any moment that truly feels like turning a page into a new year, it is the longest night of the year. Reaching December 21 means we have made it through the darkest stretch. From that day on, we slowly gain light again. First a few seconds, then a few minutes. Just knowing that more sunlight is on the way can make the start of winter feel a little more hopeful.
So this year, pause and notice the solstice. The earth tilts, nature follows its own rhythm, and we are reminded that rest is part of the cycle. Let it be a gentle cue for us to slow down too, to cozy up, and to trust that longer days and fresh energy are on their way.
